Morgan is now 61/2 years old...she was born at 30 weeks with sever IUGR weighing 2lbs. Since we have been home we have had our fair share of health problems. She spent a week in the hospital with pnemonia at 20 months and has had it to too many times to count since, she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism at 31/2, she has asthma, she is small for her age. Since her immune system is weaker then others when she gets sick she gets really sick and usually ends up in a visit to the hospital. She even got the HINI virus before I even had a chance to get her the vaccine....she ended up in the hospital having a bunch of test done. She got pnemonia from it of course and was put on an antibotic and tamiflu. My son also caught the H1N1 from her and all he got was a runny nose and fever. I just don't think that it is fair, why can't Morgan skip all of the childhood viruses, hasn't she been through enough?? Every time she gets sick she loses about 2lbs and she can't afford to lose 2lbs when she only weighs 36lbs. When she was diagnosed with hypothyroidism her TSH levels were so high that our doctor said if an adult walked in with levels that high they would be like the walking dead, but because she knew no different she just lived life probably feeling like crap. Not only is it the physical health issues its the mental health issues too. She has been diagnosed with situational anxiety around medical situations. She use to have panic attacks, they seem to be getting better as she gets older and gets a better understanding of what is going on. She is now sitting on a wiggle chair at school and the word ADHD was thrown out by her teacher...I am to take her to the doctor this week to talk to her about it. When does it end? I think she is a very special girl and has a great purpose in the world.
What does Morgan do that displays like panic attacks? How have you been able to overcome these in your many years with medical problems?
I don't know a lot about ADHD, but I do suspect that it is over-diagnosed in highly active children. Attention span is not part our society's functional capacity, so why should we expect highly active children to be any better? That being said, one of my nursing co-workers has a son with ADHD and he swears by the treatment. It's a touchy tough subject!
How do I encourage you to stay strong when I often find myself saying the same words that you've written? Our children go through more in the first year of their life than some people do in an entire lifetime. It's NOT fair that even more should be asked of them.
And yet, they are the walking miracles who challenge us to smile every day and hug them just a little bit tighter just for being alive.
Don't give up or give in. Morgan is strong; a survivor. You will show her the way.
