Hearing Aids and Auditory Neuropathy

After the initial diagnosis of profound hearing loss, Torran's tests steadily improved until just before Christmas of last year. The first two tests of this year show the same thing: mild to moderate hearing loss in both ears. He's getting fitted for hearing aids next week.

He puts EVERYTHING in his mouth... how am I going to keep these fancy pieces of equipment from his chompers?! Sure the therapist says he'll stop fussing with it when he realizes it's helping him hear... that is IF it helps him.

Hearing aids are not guarenteed to help the hearing loss of auditory neuropathy.

I just picture my little man who loves to pull his ear when he's drinking a bottle of milk not being able to do it without running into expensive technology.

If it weren't for the desire I have to give him the best of every available opportunity, and that includes clarity of speech through clarity of hearing, then I would leave it alone until later. At least the hearing aids are loaners so if they don't work we won't have wasted money on them.

That being said, if they don't work, we'll have to consider cochlear implant..... an idea which saddens me even more (personally for selfish reasons because he won't be able to hear sounds like nature intended but rather like electrical signals).

January was has been a rough month.
