Cerebral Palsy

Torran has been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. Does anyone have any experiences to share? Suggestions? We already take him to MEDEK private physiotherapy. He'll be getting leg braces next week. He'll likely need these for life. Luckily, we're looking at level 1 or mild CP.

I don't even know what kind of funding is available to help cover the costs of supplies that the government doesn't cover. The Canadian Health Care only covers 75% of the cost of the leg braces according to the physiotherapists. I don't even know if they'll cover his private physio (we're in discussions with the tax department right now about last year's health claim).

I'm just starting out with my surface scratching, so I'll contribute anything I uncover too.

Bloorview MacMillan

Not sure if you have been in touch with Bloorview or even if your in their catch basin.  They have a fabulous team that will help you to navigate the funding system.

Usually if you have health insurance it will pay the additional 25% not covered by ADP.

I am going through the exact same thing with Linden's VOC (voice output system).  It costs us $800/year to rent or we could buy it for $8000.  ADP paid 75% of the rental fee and we're kicking in the rest.  I spoke with our insurance company today and have argued that it should be an eligable expense under the major medical equipment coverage.  They have told me they will review our case on an individual basis and see if they might cover it.  Otherwise we pay for it out of our healthcare spending account.

Hope this helps.

funding and Bloorview

Hi Lauren

yes, we're involved with Bloorview for developmental progress and on a waiting list for their neurodevelopment program (nursery). But I wasn't aware that they help out with funding, I mean other than signing off of the SSAH form (which I had decided to try and apply for again now that we have these new diagnoses... let's see if they have money this year). I'll ask my developmental resource teacher about it.

cheers
